The impact of AI in a graphic design studio

Artificial intelligence has been a great addition to the graphic design industry, offering a variety of benefits and transforming some of the ways designers work. AI has the ability to analyse vast amounts of data, create creative outputs and help speed up some design processes, becoming an indispensable tool for graphic designers worldwide.

One of the benefits to AI in design is that it helps to streamline the creative design process. It has the ability to analyse design trends, user preferences and brand aesthetics, providing designers with vital insights to help them make important decisions during the process. It can be used to create layout designs, colour palettes and typography. Some designers say that they use the tool to free up time for the strategic and more innovative aspects of their work. It eliminates the guesswork during design decisions and relies on data sets and machine learning rather than how humans rely on their eyes to see the visuals.

Us designers will sit at our laptop screen comparing two different shades of blue trying to figure out which one compliments the primary brand colour. Which one makes it “pop” more? Whereas, AI looks at the HEX code or the RGB breakdown and makes decisions depending on values – resulting in decisions being made far quicker.

Here in the studio, we love AI and utilise its capabilities on a daily basis across multiple different disciplines. Our three most common uses are:

1

One of our most popular uses for it is the ‘generative fill’ feature on Photoshop. This is a great tool if you’re ever in the instance that you have come across a perfect image for your editorial, but it hasn’t got enough height or width for your required proportions. This is where you can drop it into Photoshop, select the area you would like to expand and click generate. As seen in the images below:

When working on projects in the studio we often have to come up with pieces of creative copy. If we’re struggling or the project is time sensitive we will ask Chat GPT to provide us with clever on-brand copy that we can use as a base to spark further ideas.

At Launch we design a LOT of websites, so we fully understand the importance of the user journey, and testing this to ensure it functions in the most optimal way. This can be achieved by asking Chat GPT how it would navigate around the website, getting from A to B. This user journey gives us a holistic view of the product experience and helps us focus on the UX design.

Overall, AI has become a handy tool in the design industry, definitely not something to be scared off! It benefits aspects such as elevating creativity, efficiency and innovation, and helps to streamline the creative process, enabling us to push the boundaries of design, opening up a realm of possibilities for creative expression. As AI continues to evolve, its impact on the industry continues to grow, empowering designers to create even more impactful and compelling visual outcomes.

One day will we be unable to distinguish whether something was created by AI or humans – was this blog written by Chat GPT? …I guess we will never know!
