Books we loved in 2022

#TeamLaunch have been reflecting on their favourite books of 2022 — from education to design inspiration, new learnings and motivation… We’ve read it all! Check it out and the team's thoughts below.

The book for design motivation for any project

Mid Century Modern Graphic Design by Theo Inglis

Mid Century Modern Design looks at the mid-century design style, capturing the super colourful and innovative book covers, posters, adverts, typography and illustrations (the list goes on!) of artists and designers of the time. It is a comprehensive guide analysing the reasons why the style took on its own identity as well as wider influences and impacts. Picked up during a visit to the Gordon Russell Design Museum in Broadway, this book offers inspiration on every page and has become a firm favourite for thinking outside the box!

The book for public speaking/presenting/you-name-it 101

How to Own The Room by Viv Groskop

This book us public speaking 101, a font of self-confidence knowledge and everything inbetween. Viv writes in a charismatic and relatable tone, creating warmth and understanding and making everything seem achievable and doable. This book has it all and can provide inspiration and motivation to everyone – and has since been recommended to anyone who will listen to us bang on about it!

The book for philosophy for beginners

The Philosophy Cure by Laurence Devillairs

The Philosophy Cure discusses the most famous philosophies in the most manageable and digestible way — making them understandable and relatable, but also applicable to every day life. This book gave me a lot of values to instil in every day life and a lot of learn and adopt around self improvement. The book focuses heavily on stoicism and how you can implement this daily — being able to think logically and critically has also made me a better designer as I’m able to take on feedback and constructive criticism in a positive and optimistic way!

The book for typographical education and knowledge

Just My Type by Simon Garfield

Just my type explores and examines the influence and role of typefaces and typography within our daily lives. Garfield touches on why we like or dislike certain typefaces and their attributes whilst also commenting on how a font can influence the perception of someone. He uncovers the extent to which fonts not only shape but define the world we live in today.

The book for inspiration and igniting a fire

Good Vibes Good Life by Vex King

Good Vibes Good Life is a book that was talked about by many in 2022. I had to get my hands on it to see what the hype was all about and I'm so glad I did. It was a nice change reading a non-fiction book that is full of inspirational quotes, messages and more. The author, Vex King, is a major voice in the world of personal development and certainly an eye opener for myself and many others. I'm also really fond of the typeface that was used in the body of the book, which is always a bonus!

The book for an eye-opening and thought provoking read

Women Don’t Owe You Pretty by Florence Given
Buy it here

Women Don’t Owe You Pretty is an extremely insightful and eye opening book discussing out-dated narratives and other complex and controversial subjects. It gives you different perspectives that you wouldn’t normally think of and a lot of moments of realisations. There has been other copyright controversy around this book but I still took a lot away from it – self-awareness but with a renewed understanding of why. It’s very useful to reinforce strong values too and how to approach out-dated societal norms. The book is also full of amazing illustrations that hugely inspired my design work!
